This has me wondering if Nels might have a hidden talent worth millions. Surely, he can achieve something other than breaking things and tormenting the dog. My fear is that his gifts are more like those of Pearls Before Swine's Snuffles than law-abiding Tama. They even look alike. Maybe it's a fluffy thing ...

This story reminds me of Hachiko, an Akita dog in Tokyo, Japan, that accompanied his owner to the train station in the morning and waited for him to return at the end of the day.
His owner suffered a stroke at work one day and didn't return. Hachiko was given away, but always escaped and went home. Once he realized that his owner no longer lived there, he began showing up and waiting at the train station, where he became a permanent fixture.
Ten years later, he died. But Hachiko has been memorialized with a statue at Shibuya Station, two movies, two books, and a Japanese postage stamp.
So, yeah! Nelson's got a shot at fame and fortune.
One of the travel guides had a picture of the statue at Shibuya station, but I didn't know the story. Wonderful! Thanks for sharing! That's on my must see list for the trip.
